Wish List

Because they deserve it.

Just as we find joy in giving to those we care about, offering a meaningful gift to our precious wildlife is a gesture of compassion that makes a real difference. This season, we’re shining a light on nourishing treats, those small but vital extras that bring comfort and enrichment to the orphaned animals in our care.

Every creature in our sanctuary has a unique story of survival, and these special treats provide more than just nutrition; they offer moments of joy, encouragement, and support on their journey to recovery. By choosing an item from our wish list, you’re not only helping us meet their physical needs, but also showing them the kindness and care they need to thrive.

Thank you for standing with us and supporting their second chance at life.

From Ropes to Recovery – climbing structures and ropes

We prioritise the physical and psychological wellbeing of every animal in our care and for our possum, glider, and flying fox residents, climbing structures play a vital role in their rehabilitation journey. These are naturally arboreal creatures, instinctively drawn to life in the treetops. By providing purpose-built climbing features such as branches, ropes, and elevated platforms within their enclosures, we allow them to express these innate behaviours in a safe, supportive environment.

These structures offer far more than just activity, they promote essential exercise, improve coordination, and help injured or orphaned animals rebuild their strength and confidence. Crucially, for those being prepared for release into the wild, these climbing opportunities simulate the complexity of their natural habitat, ensuring they are physically and mentally equipped to thrive independently.

Cuddles That Comfort, Play That Heals – plush toy

At Second Chance Wildlife Sanctuary, we understand the profound impact that comfort and enrichment have on the wellbeing of the animals in our care. For our young orphans and injured wildlife, plush toys serve a vital role in their emotional and developmental recovery. These soft companions act as surrogate parents or siblings, offering a sense of security during a time of distress and disorientation. The familiar texture and warmth of a plush toy can ease anxiety, reduce stress, and help animals adapt to the unfamiliar environment of rehabilitation. Beyond comfort, these toys also support essential play behaviours that encourage movement, curiosity, and cognitive engagement which is critical for both physical and mental development. For many of the animals at our sanctuary, a simple plush toy is more than just an object; it is a lifeline to normalcy, comfort, and healing.

Small but mighty – Mealworms

At Second Chance Wildlife Sanctuary, we are committed to providing the most natural and nourishing diet possible for the possums in our care. As primarily herbivorous animals, Australian possums thrive on a variety of plant matter including leaves, blossoms, bark, fungi, and native fruits. To meet these needs, our team regularly forages in the bush to supply an ever-changing selection of native flora, replicating their wild diet as closely as possible.

However, possums are also opportunistic omnivores and may occasionally consume insects, bird eggs, or small animals in the wild. To support their natural development, especially in the early stages of rehabilitation, we offer a small daily portion of fresh mealworms. These serve as a highly nutritious supplement, rich in protein, and help young possums build strength while under our care. Thoughtfully integrated into their feeding routine, mealworms are not only a delicacy but also a valuable part of their growth and recovery.

Nutritious treat to eat – kangaroo pellets

Our joey kangaroos occasionally enjoy a special treat, nutritionally balanced pellets specifically formulated for native herbivores such as kangaroos, wallabies, and wombats. While their natural diet primarily consists of grasses and native vegetation, these pellets serve as an important dietary supplement, especially within a sanctuary setting where access to optimal grazing can be limited.

More than just a tasty treat, these pellets are thoughtfully designed to support healthy growth and ongoing maintenance. Rich in essential vitamins and minerals, high in fibre, and low in starch, they help ensure our joeys receive the nourishment they need to thrive during rehabilitation. Providing this level of care is part of our unwavering commitment to giving each animal the best possible chance at a strong and healthy life.
