Species: Eastern Grey Kangaroo
Apollo has endured more hardship in his young life than most wildlife ever should. His journey began in heartbreak, torn from his mother’s pouch after she became entangled in barbed wire. Alone and vulnerable on the ground, he was luckily discovered by a compassionate passerby who alerted our team. Apollo was brought to our sanctuary, where he began his healing journey alongside other eastern grey joeys of similar age.
But his challenges were far from over. One humid summer evening, a violent storm swept through the hinterland, bringing with it hail the size of golf balls. Unaware of the looming danger, Apollo wandered from his shelter and was struck by the powerful storm. One of the hailstones shattered his delicate forearm.
After receiving immediate veterinary care, his fracture was treated and his arm placed in a cast. To support his recovery, we moved Apollo into the main house, where he could rest in a calm, controlled environment with a soft, secure bed. Although his body healed steadily, the emotional trauma took longer to mend. We responded with compassion, nurturing his sensitive nature and allowing him all the time he needed to feel safe again.
Gradually, Apollo regained his confidence. He found comfort in returning to his handmade fabric pouch and sleeping among the younger joeys in the house. Only when he was ready did he rejoin the outdoor group of kangaroos his age, stronger, braver, and ready for the next chapter of his life.
