Adopt Bentley

Species: Eastern Grey Kangaroo

The length of time this vulnerable young joey lay alone on the cold driveway remains unknown before the owners discovered him. Hoping for a miracle, they waited an hour before seeking help, believing the mother might return, unaware that it is exceptionally rare for a mother to come back for her joey after such an incident. Barely covered in fur, dehydrated, and chilled to the bone, the fragile joey arrived in our care with grazes on his chest and deep cuts across his legs and feet.

We immediately wrapped him in warmth and carefully rehydrated him, providing the critical first steps in his recovery. The following day, persistent weeping from his abrasions prompted us to apply healing creams and gently bandage his legs, protecting the wounds and giving them the best chance to heal properly.

A week into care, signs of respiratory distress emerged. Bentley began sneezing with a runny nose and quickly deteriorated, struggling to breathe. Concerned for his wellbeing, we sought an immediate veterinary assessment. Though his chest and lungs were clear, a bacterial or viral infection was suspected and later confirmed to be a herpes virus. The prescribed medication brought gradual relief, and with unwavering love and meticulous care, he slowly regained strength and vitality.

Today, this resilient joey thrives, standing as a beacon of hope and a role model for the younger joeys in our care. Despite his trials, he remains a gentle soul, cherishing his milk feeds and the comfort of affectionate cuddles. Bentley’s story is a profound demonstration of how unwavering compassion, dedicated professional care, and remarkable resilience combine to nurture healing and foster hope, proving that even the most vulnerable can overcome adversity and thrive.
